On July 24, 1870, the 1st trans-continental railroad, originally known as Pacific Railroad, U.S. rail service began. Hundreds of miles of the original line are still in service today. While the original rail has long since been replaced due to age and wear, the lines generally run on top of the original, handmade grade.
