Jamestown, Virginia, was settled on May 13, 1607 when approximately 100 English colonists arrived along the west bank of the James River.
Did you know...? One of the first settlers and new colony council member was Captain John Smith. In December of 1607, Smith and a few other colonists were captured by Indians while searching for provisions. Smiths companions were killed, but Smith himself was spared because of Chief Powhatan's daughter, Pocahontas.
