A U.S. Navy Grumman TBF-1 Avenger torpedo bomber in flight in mid-1942.
A few famous Avenger aviators were President George H.W. Bush and Paul Newman.
The Avenger began its U.S. service in 1942, and the first action was during the Battle of Midway. In spite of the loss of five of the six Avengers during its combat debut, it became one of the most outstanding torpedo bombers of World War II. It was modified after the war and it remained in use until the 1960s. #WWII #USNavy #military
